CSI For the Regular Guy ™

Winter 2026
A Hands-On Forensic Crime Scene Academy for Civilians

Presenter: Detective Dave MacNeil (Watertown MA Police Department-Ret)

About the Course

Have you ever watched a true crime documentary and wondered how investigators actually process a crime scene?

Now you can learn firsthand.

This is not a lecture.

CSI For The Regular Guy™ is a hands-on forensic experience designed to take you behind the crime scene tape and into the world of real criminal investigations.

Working with professional crime scene equipment and techniques used by investigators, you’ll develop and photograph latent fingerprints, search for hidden evidence using forensic light sources, document and interpret bloodstain patterns, conduct presumptive blood testing exercises, collect and preserve biological evidence, and learn how DNA evidence is recognized and processed during real investigations.

Participants will work with a wide variety of evidence surfaces commonly encountered at actual crime scenes, processing fingerprints on glass, plastic, metal, paper, cardboard, carpeting, and other challenging materials using powders, chemicals, alternate light sources, cyanoacrylate (superglue) fuming, iodine fuming, ninhydrin processing, and fluorescent fingerprint development techniques.

Biological evidence exercises will involve the detection and examination of biological stains on multiple surface types using professional forensic techniques and forensic light source technology. Participants will learn how investigators locate, document, collect, preserve, and package evidence for laboratory examination.

The academy also introduces participants to footwear and impression evidence. Students will learn how investigators locate, photograph, document, and preserve footwear impressions and will create actual footwear casts using techniques employed during real crime scene investigations.

Unlike many demonstration-style programs, this academy is heavily hands-on. Participants will actively process evidence, develop fingerprints, search for biological evidence, conduct presumptive blood testing exercises, photograph evidence, and apply investigative techniques while working through realistic forensic exercises.

In addition to professional forensic methods, participants will learn practical “tricks of the trade,” including creative fingerprint development techniques using commonly available household materials and items.

Whether you’re a true crime enthusiast, aspiring investigator, writer, podcaster, student, or simply curious about forensic science, CSI For The Regular Guy™ offers a unique opportunity to step behind the tape and experience crime scene investigation firsthand.
